Growing up in North Carolina I wasn’t tuned in to the rich history of clay in the area, but I am becoming more aware as I wade deeper. I was first captivated by salt glazed and ash glazed pots from around NC. I continue to be blown away by historical and contemporary ceramics from around the world, particularly the buncheong ware of Korea and traditions it has influenced.
My main learning in art and in clay has taken place at UNC Chapel Hill, Claymakers Arts Community, Penland School of Craft in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and in observation of other artists. Most of this education is pieced together and comes through much trial and error in studio practice. I seek to remain responsive to that process of trial and error, and faithful to my values and the lessons picked up from those who are farther along.
I make pots for everyday use, and hope to embody some of the beauty, humility, ordinariness, and spontaneity of everyday life in my work. I hope that this work goes out into the world and speaks to people in their everyday, whether they are drinking a cup of coffee in the quiet morning, or sharing a meal around the table.
